La Clínica’s HIV youth initiative, ¡Empodérate! (Empower Yourself!) is the only bilingual, HIV program that targets young Latino men who have sex with men and young male-to-female transgender Latinas between the ages of 18 and 29 in Washington, DC.
¡Empodérate! builds on La Clínica’s 20 year history of fighting the HIV epidemic in the Latino community through programs that create a safe and supportive space in which to strengthen individuals and community. Historically, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (GBT) individuals have been among the most impacted by HIV within the local Latino community. La Clínica has addressed this problem by tackling the underlying causes of the epidemic, including isolation, depression, and the lack of safe and substance-free spaces for an immigrant community frequently facing rejection from family and community due to homophobia, poverty, and immigration status.
Year-round ¡Empodérate! has fun and free activities on and off-site, including:
- Noches de cine (Movie Nights): Every other Wednesday.
- Noches culturales (Cultural Nights)
- ¡Empodérate! Pageant (Queen and King of ¡Empodérate!)
- Pride parades
