August 25, 2009
On behalf of former Executive Directors Dr. Juan Romagoza and Enrique Cobham and former Board President Mauricio Silva, we are honored to present you with our 2007 & 2008 report.
What a couple of years it has been! Over the past two years, La Clínica implemented a sliding fee scale, gained Federally Qualified Health Center status, bid adieu to its long-time Executive Director, endured and overcame a cash-flow crisis, shifted to Electronic Medical Records, and renovated its building. Throughout these numerous challenges and changes, we are proud that La Clínica never wavered in its mission of providing culturally appropriate health services to persons in the Latino community regardless of their ability to pay. In 2007 and 2008 La Clínica provided over 7,500 uninsured and underinsured men, women, and children with 106,662 comprehensive health care services.

A new report from the District of Columbia’s Department of Health revealed that the HIV epidemic that is plaguing the city is even worse than what was estimated. According to the report, 3% of the District’s population is infected with HIV/AIDS. This translates into more than 15,000 cases. While the African American population has been hit the hardest by the epidemic, accounting for more than 70% of the new cases, the truth is that the virus crosses ethnic groups, lifestyles and sexual orientations. For Catalina Sol, Director of the HIV/AIDS Department at La Clínica del Pubelo, the figure is not a revelation, as those that find themselves in the “battleground” know what they are facing. “I would say it is no surprise. It is not an indication that something has changed dramatically in the city, with one exception, which is the ability to account for the epidemic in the right way,” said the expert.

From the minute I walked through the door of La Clínica del Pueblo in 2000, I fell in love. I was immediately struck by spirit of this clinic that cared so much for its patients and worked so hard to expand access to healthcare for everyone. I knew that I wanted to be a part of this exciting and vital organization.
On January 12th I assumed the position of Executive Director at La Clínica del Pueblo, after more than 8 years of working here. I am honored to have been chosen for this position, and I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in providing high quality health services to the community. Since La Clínica has always included its patients and the community as a whole in our goals and successes, I want to share our plan for the future with you.
Given the rough economic climate, I am promoting an aggressive agenda for the coming year to ensure our financial stability so that we may continue to serve the over 7,500 individuals who use our services each year, as well as expand to reach even more.
