Washington, DC – December 7, 2016 – On December 10th, from 12:30pm to 2pm, La Clínica del Pueblo and the Community of Christ invite community members, community leaders, staff and volunteers to come celebrate and tour La Clínica’s new site – La Casa, in Mount Pleasant. The open house will honor La Casa’s historic use as a community space for many organizations and groups in the Washington DC area, including the Latino immigrant community, as well as celebrate its planned new uses.
Through a competitive process, La Clínica del Pueblo was selected to purchase the La Casa building located in the heart of the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. The Community of Christ has owned the building since 1973, and in addition to conducting religious services there, made the space available to other non-profits and community groups working to advance community education, cultural enrichment, community engagement and community mobilization. Ownership was transferred to La Clínica on November 17, 2016.
“Our congregation is so pleased that La Clínica del Pueblo will be managing and using La Casa for many, many years to come,” said Dianne Russell, of the Community of Christ. “We found La Clínica’s vision for education, advocacy, and community engagement to be in great alignment with the Community of Christ’s hopes for the broad local community we have sought to serve.”
“La Clínica del Pueblo has been a safe space to the Latino community for over 33 years, we are honored to take on the immense responsibility of carrying on the La Casa legacy, and to have additional space for our expanding programs.” said Alicia Wilson, Executive Director of La Clínica del Pueblo. “The La Casa site will continue to serve as a drop-in center that fosters inclusion, justice and hope for people in our community.” The La Casa site will also host programs focusing on health education and chronic diseases management, domestic violence support, language services, health equity and advocacy.
