Extreme heat can impact everyone, but certain groups are especially at risk: adults over 65, babies and young children, pregnant women, people who work outdoors, those without air conditioning, people experiencing homelessness, and pets.
Tips to stay safe:
- Drink plenty of water
- Use sunscreen
- Breastfeed babies frequently
- Stay in cool, well-ventilated spaces
- Avoid going outside during the hottest hours of the day (usually between 11 AM and 5 PM)
Without proper precautions, extreme heat can quickly lead to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. If someone shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 right away.
Watch for symptoms like:
- Fatigue
- Muscle cramps
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Dry mouth
- Vomiting
- Confusion or disorientation
- Seizures
- Delirium
